Safety

The primary reason that most people get an automatic pool cover is safety and security.  It greatly reduces the risk of accidental drowning with children, pets, and even wildlife.

It creates a secure barrier over your pool that is typically designed to hold 2,000 pounds. So, unless you have pet elephants or adopted hippos, it will keep your family safe. Yes, you can walk on it. No, you shouldn’t walk on it.

Even if automatic pool covers didn’t offer any other benefits besides peace of mind, they would be well worth it.

Conservation

Saves money and energy

Keeps the things in the pool that need to kept in the pool.  Keeps the things out of the pool that should remain out.

Energy and Money Savings
An automatic pool cover cuts heat loss and can heat the pool naturally.  When the pool is closed, not only is evaporation eliminated, but the sunshine on the cover helps warm the water already in the pool. Without a heater, the difference in water temperature between a pool with an automatic pool cover versus a pool without a cover can be as much as 20 degrees. If you let Mother Nature warm your pool up for you, you can save on heating costs.

Water Conservation
Most new pool owners expect to add more water from time to time.  Water gets splashed out.  But the real surprise is how much water your pool will lose to evaporation, especially on hot, sunny, or windy days.  Without a cover, your pool can lose as much as 2-4 inches of water a week simply because of evaporation. An automatic cover keeps the water in the pool, and helps cut back on the need for refills.

Possible Insurance Savings
Sleepy Hollow Pools only installs automatic pool covers that exceed the ASTM safety standards, so there is also the possibility of it lowering your insurance premiums, because it adds an extra layer of protection and reduces risk. It’s worth checking with your insurance company.

Time Saver

You get a pool to enjoy a pool, not to have another responsibility.

Less Chemistry, More Swimming:
We have already talked about how much evaporation can occur without a pool cover.  That doesn’t just affect the water level.  It also means that your pool chemicals are escaping into the air, and causing your water chemistry to become unbalanced.

Plus, when your pool is uncovered, debris and sunlight get in, causing algae to grow.  That means you’ll need more chlorine and more time testing and adjusting your water balance.

Cleaner Pool = Less Skimming and Scrubbing
The mention of debris, leaves, bugs, and algae brings us to the amount of time spent skimming and scrubbing a pool without a cover.  An automatic cover helps limit that mess, but also reduces factors that you don’t even think about. Rainwater and snow melt changes your pool chemistry and can leave a pool filthy, too.

Convenience and Ease
No tarp-tugging.

Question
When the sun is setting, the kids need food, and you are sun-drenched, tired, and exhausted at the end of the day would you rather:

  • Wrestle and drag a soggy pool cover into place (considering that it is deadweight, slippery, and weighs as much as you do) and then spend the night wondering if you secured it properly.
  • Flip a switch or tap an app and secure your pool in seconds.

Bonus Feature For Kentucky

Extended Swim Season

Because they help your pool retain heat, and also help heat the pool naturally, automatic covers can actually extend your swim season by several weeks. You can start enjoying your pool earlier in the spring and keep swimming further into the fall. And, a few extra weeks of summer is a good thing in Kentucky!
